2017 Summer Movie Season – Preview
It’s Summer Movie Season, folks! The time of the year where the cinemas are filled with sequels, super-heroes, explosions, color, and not a lot of thinking. Though not my favorite time of the year for movies, I love going to the movies and watching some mind-numbing movie that blows up the screen. Here are some of the titles I am looking forward to during the 2017 Summer Movie Season. I will be breaking it down by genre and naming the title I am most excited to see from said genre, followed up the runner up, which is one I am also excited for, but not as much as the main.
So here we go, my preview of the 2017 Summer Movie Season.
COMIC BOOK MOVIE – WONDER WOMAN (Patty Jenkins, June 2)
Runner Up – Spider-Man: Homecoming (Jon Watts, July 7)
- Marvel always puts out strong work in the summer and Spider-Man: Homecoming looks great, but Wonder Woman looks like it could actually be the first good DCEU film and should make Gal Gadot a star.
SEQUEL/PREQUEL – WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (Matt Reeves, July 14)
Runner Up – Alien: Covenant (Ridley Scott, May 19)
- Tough choice between these two great franchises, but the concluding chapter of the new Apes trilogy looks to be its best, most epic film yet.
COMEDY – THE HITMAN’S BODYGUARD (Patrick Hughes, August 18)
Runner Up – The House (Andrew Jay Cohen, June 30)
- Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds in a more violent, bro version of The Bodyguard (1992)? Sign me up!
ACTION – BABY DRIVER (Edgar Wright, June 28)
Runner Up – Atomic Blonde (David Leitch, July 28)
- Tough call between Charlize Theron kicking ass and taking names or an all-star Edgar Wright film. I love me some Theron, but it is hard not to get excited about anything Wright does.
ANIMATED – CARS 3 (Brian Fee, June 16)
Runner Up – Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (David Soren, June 2)
- Captain Underpants looks like a ball, but with the darker tone coming to the Cars franchise, I can’t help but think Pixar has another hit on their hands.
SCI-FI – VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS (Luc Besson, July 21)
RUNNER UP – War for the Planet of the Apes (Matt Reeves, July 14)
- War looks incredible, as I said above. Valerian looks batshit crazy and unlike anything I’ve never seen before, something only the great Luc Besson could create.
HORROR – IT COMES AT NIGHT (Trey Edward Shults, June 9)
Runner Up – Polaroid (Lars Klevberg, August 25)
- I don’t know what Polaroid is, but it could be some schlocky fun. It Comes At Night, however, looks genuinely terrifying, and I will see anything A24 puts out, as they are the best production studio in the game today.
POTENTIAL SURPRISE – TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT (Michael Bay, June 23)
Runner Up – Rough Night (Lucia Aniello, June 16)
- I occasionally enjoy some good ‘ol fashion Bayhem, and The Last Knight looks like the Bayest movie ever. I can’t help but not think this could be metal on metal carnage at its best. Watch out for Rough Night, though, as it could follow in the footsteps of last year’s surprise hit, Bad Moms.
POTENTIAL BUST – KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD (Guy Ritchie, May 12)
Runner Up – The Emoji Movie (Tony Leondis, July 28)
- The Emoji Movie is the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard for a movie, but I’ve already seen King Arthur and it is a complete disaster and will be tough to beat as the worst movie of the summer.
MOST OSCAR POTENTIAL – DUNKIRK (Christopher Nolan, July 21)
Runner Up – Detroit (Kathryn Bigelow, August 4)
- Oscar favorites Christopher Nolan and Kathryn Bigelow are both back with summer movies, which is a treat for all movie goers. I have a feeling Detroit might get pushed back to a more awards-friendly release date, but Dunkirk could be Nolan’s breakthrough in the Best Director field.
TOP 5 MOST ANTICIPATED MOVIES OF THE SUMMER
1 – DUNKIRK (Christopher Nolan, July 21)
- Christopher Nolan’s war epic is sure to be something to behold and could be an Oscar favorite coming out of the summer.
2 – DETROIT (Kathryn Bigelow, August 4)
- This may get pushed back to the fall, but Kathryn Bigelow brings her mastery and grit to an important and controversial event in American history.
3 – ALL EYEZ ON ME (Benny Boom, June 16)
- Has the potential to be more Notorious (2009) and less Straight Outta Compton (2015), but 2-Pac is one of my favorite artists ever and Demetrius Shipp Jr. seems to truly embody the troubled rapper.
4 – WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (Matt Reeves, July 14)
- The concluding chapter in the surprisingly great Apes prequel trilogy, War is sure to rap the series up with an epic, dramatic, thrilling fashion.
5 – VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS (Luc Besson, July 21)
- I don’t know why I want to see this movie so bad, but I do. It looks insane and could be either a complete mess or a masterpiece. I can’t wait to find out.
